Lapford Soapbox:

Anti-social behaviour.

Sadly, the even the small rural community of Lapford is not completely immune to this blight of modern day society that plagues the larger towns and cities. Fortunately the problem here is at a relatively low level, but it can still be distressing for those affected.

The legal definition of anti-social behaviour is ' behaving in a manner that causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household'.

This can be anything from noisy or abusive neighbours through to "yobbish" teenagers or even cars speeding dangerously through the village. In many cases, the perpetrators of this behaviour may be too self obsessed to realise that their behaviour is unacceptable, but this is not an excuse.

The general advise from the authorities is to try to resolve the issue yourself in the first instance by contacting the perpetrators directly and making your feelings known. This may not always be appropriate and lets face it, people that behave antisocially are rarely the most approachable people, but it is worth a try if you feel able.

If you don't feel able to discuss the issues directly or you have been unable to resolve the issue yourself - don't put up with continuing anti-social behaviour and don't be frightened to report it!

To report serious incidents of anti-social behaviour such as assault, racial abuse, intimidation or criminal damage, contact the Police. In an emergency call 999 or for other reports dial 101.

Other useful contacts: environmental health department has a 24 hour helpline 01884 255255. For other (non-emergency) matters call the Devon & Cornwall Police on 0845 2 777 444.

Don't put up with antisocial behaviour - someone will be able to help!
